I know I said I would write about the book Rework for my next post, however, as I work to complete that post I’m going to throw in a SECRET-SURPRISE-POST.
When I look in the mirror do you know what I see? Do I see a slightly overweight man, with few chest hairs, decent calf muscles, and sporadic freckles? Yes. More importantly, I see a terrible typist. Even as I’m typing this- it is a concoction of key misses, errors, incorrect punctuation use and cursing. I literally had to use spell check three times to correct the horror that are my sentences.
If you are one of them fancy city slickers, who benefited from a properly funded elementary school education and actually learned how to properly type during grade school, this post is not for you. If you are like me and look at your fingers every time you have to type a “p” or the elusive “q” HEED THIS POST. Sad as it may be, the error-riddled finesse that is my typography, has improved significantly over the past few months. I’ve found that having a slight improvement in typing skills has had a resounding effect in my job and personal life. Here are some thoughts.
- Most business communication today happens via email. I have seen a few older gentlemen in my firm painstakingly pointer-finger-punch their way through an email for five minutes that should have taken 30 seconds. I have also seen some colleagues not even look down during their speedy email draft and fire it off in seconds without touching the mouse. Let’s say in any given day you have to send out 50 emails. If you are spending 3 minutes per email, you spend over two and a half hours in a day just writing emails. If you can get those emails down to one minute- what are you going to do with the additional hour and half you have every day?
- There is a delay between your thoughts and when you can communicate them. We have trained all our lives to narrow that gap with speech. Professional public speakers hold seminars and speak right off the cuff; their thoughts are happening the same time they are saying them. We don’t place the same importance to the thought-type delay. Shouldn’t we be able to type at a pace that is close to our thoughts? It is fast as hell I know, but getting closer could be huge.
- It’s a waste of your time and skill set to spend time fixing your typing mistakes as they occur rather than getting it right off the bat. It feels small at the time but once you crunch some number you will see how much of a true time-suck this is.
- It also opens up the doors for more opportunities. Some examples- blog posting and article writing. These become less of a chore and more of an easy way to differentiate yourself in your career.

I try to practice a few times a week and I have definitely seen improvement. If you need a motivating factor then realize that the time you save could be filled with personal endeavors- you know the stuff that makes you happy. Happy typing!
